Referrals and Right to Choose

‘Right to Choose’ is an NHS pathway in England that allows patients to select an approved provider for their ADHD assessment. If a Clinician agrees that an assessment is appropriate and makes the referral, the patient can choose any provider that holds an NHS contract under this framework. This often leads to much shorter waiting times. It applies specifically to initial ADHD assessments, and the patient must be registered with a GP in England.

You can find out more information on the Right to Choose website.

The Adult ADHD team at Leeds GP Confederation is led by Dr Khuram Ahmed; with a skill mixed team that includes Specialist Practitioners from Nursing and other healthcare professional backgrounds. All clinical staff working within the service are registered with relevant professional regulators and we as providers are registered with the Care Quality Commission.

We understand that people that are neurodiverse benefit from clear options and flexibility. That’s why we offer:

· Face-to-face assessments at our welcoming and accessible clinic based in Harehills, Leeds.

· Remote assessments via secure video-conferencing, for those who prefer to engage from home or another comfortable space.

Our Leeds clinic offers free on-site parking and is well served by public transport.

For patients referred from within West Yorkshire, if medication is recommended, the initial prescribing appointment must be face-to-face. This ensures compliance with the West Yorkshire Integrated Care Board (ICB) contract for Accredited Providers and supports safe, effective treatment.

If you live in England, you have the Right to Choose Leeds GP Confederation to provide your care. If you would like to be referred to our service, you can download this letter to give to your GP and request that they refer you to our service.

Yes. We can accept referrals for patients that have been diagnosed elsewhere. We would need to see a copy of your assessment report to ensure that the report satisfies appropriate quality standards before treatment options can be discussed. Assessment

The waiting time for assessment can vary depending on demand, and the completeness of the information we have received. Our current waiting time for assessment is available on our homepage.

If any additional documents or clarification is needed, this may extend the timeline slightly.

During your ADHD assessment, clinicians will explore a full range of factors that may influence your symptoms, including anxiety, depression, trauma, substance use, personality factors, and autistic traits. These areas are assessed to ensure an accurate diagnosis and to identify whether another condition may be contributing to your symptoms.

However, the service does not provide autism assessments or full diagnostic assessments for other mental health conditions.

If autistic traits are identified, your referral may be redirected to a commissioned autism or combined autism/ADHD pathway for a full autism assessment. If concerns arise during your assessment, such as unmanaged mental-health risks, the clinician will signpost, liaise with your GP, or refer you to the appropriate mental-health service.

Once ADHD is confirmed at the assessment appointment, the next step, if medication is clinically appropriate and agreed by yourself, is to proceed to medication initiation. Before treatment can begin, the service must complete baseline physical-health checks in the HCA Clinic (height, weight, blood pressure, heart rate, and ECG if clinically indicated). Once baseline checks have been completed a face-to-face appointment will be made for medication initiation.

We assess and treat adults aged 18 and above. The service is specifically designed for adult ADHD assessment, diagnosis, and treatment. If you are under 18, your care will need to be provided through the appropriate children and young people’s services – please contact your GP Practice for further support.

Treatment and Support

You can tell us about any reasonable adjustments you need at any time before your appointment by contacting the service. This may include support with communication, sensory or accessibility needs, or bringing someone with you. We will record your requests so our team can prepare for your appointment.

If you need translation or interpretation support for your appointment, this can be arranged. The service is committed to ensuring that everyone can access assessment and treatment, and interpreters can be provided to support you throughout your appointment.

Patient Information and Support

Your personal and medical information is kept secure and confidential via the clinical system. It is used only to provide your care, plan your treatment, and ensure we offer you the right support. We usually share relevant information with your GP so they can stay informed about your care; this helps ensure you receive coordinated and safe support. We will not share any information with your employer, school, or university. You have the right to request a copy of your assessment report or any information we hold about you.

The service offers support before, during, and between appointments, including psychoeducation, lifestyle guidance, and signposting to helpful resources. If you are discharged, whether you choose non-medication strategies or no longer need specialist input, you will receive a summary of recommended strategies and information about further support options.

You can return to the service in the future if your needs change. If you previously declined medication or later feel you need additional help, you may re-enter the Medication Initiation pathway without a new diagnostic assessment, as long as the pathway is still appropriate. An updated clinical review and baseline checks will be completed on re-entry.
